There is a benefit to our work as the Direct Services Advocate at LEAF that has nothing to do with the things we usually think of as benefits of hard work. This benefit is the gratitude that comes pouring in our direction, just for doing our jobs. Here are a few of the written thanks we’ve gotten recently: “Thank goodness for you and
LEAF!” “Thanks so much and see you then.” “Yay, thank you!” Every week we get repeated thanks, and some hugs, from people who come to LEAF. They often say “I didn’t know I could get help with this too”.
In the last three weeks, the Direct Services providers at LEAF have met with over forty people. We have helped a number of people with Medicaid and health insurance issues. There have been people still struggling with the impacts of the flood on their lives. Residents who are working through a difficult financial decision have come to have a second set of eyes on the problem. Gas vouchers, bankruptcy, Medicare questions, Food Stamps, social security disability insurance questions, folks needing help to pay rent, utilities, or transportation needs. Case managers and advocates from the OUR Center, from Healthy Kids and Adults, Health Care Navigators, Housing and Financial Counselors, are all available at LEAF to assist with finding out about veterans' benefits, Family Self Sufficiency programs, Temporary Rental Assistance programs, and much, much, more.
Every one of the people the Direct Services providers serve says “thank you.” It can be hard to ask for help, and it can be harder still to accept it graciously. Every week everyone who works or volunteers at LEAF gets to witness gracious acceptance. It is a benefit to the work that is beyond price.
