Information for Immigrants from Intercambio Uniting Communities

By Emily Dusel, Executive Director

Dear LEAF Community,

I had the good fortune to meet with the Executive Director of Intercambio Uniting Communities, Lee Shainis today alongside LEAF volunteer Kate Kerr.  We wanted to learn more about ways LEAF could support our undocumented clients in this new political climate.  Clients are feeling more vulnerable and afraid, and we wanted to make sure LEAF was prepared to support them. Lee shared this beautiful letter written to the immigrant students in the Intercambio program.  Thanks for the information Lee!

Dear Intercambio students,

Dear Intercambio students, our doors are always open for you! Be informed, positive, and continue to focus on learning and connecting with your community. Do not hide. Call us or visit anytime!
In Boulder County our community leaders and police officers support the immigrant community. Now is also an important time to know your rights. We do not think that immigration officials will start approaching immigrants here at work or home, but it’s best to be ready for anything.
  • You have the right to remain silent and to not talk to immigration agents at work or at home.
  • You can speak to an attorney first. You do not need to tell them where you are from if they ask.
  • If they do not have a warrant, do not open the door for them if you are at home.
  • Do not sign anything. You can cut out and hand them this card.

Here are attorneys you can contact. They provide consultations. Contact us for more contacts.

CITIZENSHIP:
“If you are interested in attending a citizenship workshop with free legal assistance, contact CIRC at 720-593-2075 and if you are interested in advocacy contact Erika at 503-753-4985.
INTERCAMBIO ENGLISH CLASS contact information:

Classes during the day, evening, or weekend. 7 levels. Citizenship, business, and computer classes too.
It’s also very important now that you follow laws, are respectful with police, and you do not get a DUI. If you drive outside of Boulder County it’s best to carefully follow all driving and make sure that all brake lights are functioning. This can be a reason for getting pulled over. In Boulder County this should not cause problems, but every county is different so it’s best to be safe.
It’s also good if you are undocumented and have lived in the US for more than 2 years to have proof that you have lived here. Proof can be a utility bill, insurance or anything with your real name on it.
Do not hesitate to contact any of us at Intercambio if you have questions. Thank you!
